The new airport was a unique venture of the Airport Core Program. Under the program new roads, railways, bridges and tunnels are developed. It took six years to complete Hong Kong International Airport. The first flight operated from the airport is from the Cathay Pacific airlines. The airport has two parallel runways. The south runway has a Category II Precision Approach, while the north runway boasts of a Category IIIA ranking. The two runways have a capacity of operating sixty aircrafts per hour. There are forty nine frontal stands, twenty eight remote stands and twenty five cargo stands in the airport. The five parking bays are ideal for accommodating and executing next generation of aircraft. A proposal is going on to build a third runway. There is only one airway between Hong Kong and China.

Cathay Pacific Airways Limited comprising of a mixed Airbus and Boeing of one hundred aircraft, offers flights to Asia, New Zealand, North America, Australia, the Middle East, Europe and South Africa.
Hong Kong Express serves fixed-wing aircrafts to destinations of Ningbo, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Nanjing and Chiang Mai. Charter flights are offered to Laoag in the Philippines and Tai Chung in Taiwan.
Dragonair operates thirty five aircrafts with passenger and cargo services to Shanghai, Taiwan, Japan, Xiamen, South Korea, Middle East and Europe.
Air Hong Kong Limited operates cargo services between Hong Kong to Korea, Japan, Thailand and Singapore. Oasis Hong Kong Airlines operates passenger flights to London-Gatwick and Vancouver International Airport.
